We are proud to introduce HOMA (Alliance for Iranian LGBTQI+ Justice) — a grassroots initiative committed to justice, dignity, and protection for LGBTQI+ Iranians, with a primary focus on those inside the country, while embracing our global diaspora.
Our mission is to empower and amplify marginalized voices through advocacy, education, and community-rooted strategies. We strive to build safe, inclusive, and transformative spaces that challenge oppression and foster resilience.
Why HOMA?
Our name and symbol are inspired by the Homa bird, a legendary creature from Persian mythology said to never land, and whose shadow is believed to bring great fortune and destiny.
In some classical interpretations, the Homa is portrayed as combining both male and female characteristics, each represented by one wing and one leg. This powerful symbolism resonates deeply with our embrace of gender diversity and non-binary identities, rooted in Persian cultural heritage yet profoundly relevant today.
By choosing the name HOMA, we affirm:
- Our connection to cultural depth and ancestral resilience
- A celebration of gender and sexual fluidity, reflected in the Homa’s dual nature
- A belief in the quiet yet potent power of marginalized communities, much like the Homa’s invisible flight
Our Commitment
In this inaugural post, we outline the core pillars of HOMA’s mission:
- Supporting, empowering, and amplifying the voices of LGBTQI+ individuals in Iran
- Advancing advocacy at local and international levels to promote structural, rights-based change
- Building inclusive, community-led programs grounded in human rights
- Fostering awareness and acceptance of gender and sexual diversity through culture and lived experience
The Homa bird reminds us that transformation often happens silently, but leaves a lasting impact. Its myth teaches that those touched by its shadow carry a promise of resilience and hope. We, too, believe in the boundless potential of our communities.ilience, and collective liberation.
